Hypnosis?

I recently went to my GP for an Rx refill, and talked to her about alternate pain mgmt options. Pain Killers don't work for me, because even though it feels like muscle/joint pain, it's not muscle/joint pain, so meds that treat it that way don't solve the problem. She suggested many things--Acupuncture, massage therapy, and hypnosis.

Now, I have heard discussion about the first 2, but has anyone tried hypnosis? My first reaction to the idea is that I have worked very hard to get rid of the things and people that were messing with my head, that inviting someone I don't know in to essentially re-arrange my brain doesn't seem wise. Also, can taking a few deep breaths and listening to someone talk in monotone really do anything for me?? It doesn't seem like it. On the other hand, I had similar feelings about taking anti-depressants at first. I saw it as a mask for what is bothering me, not a solution for it. So, I am open to hearing about what it has done for people. I'll consider anything that could help!!

Any opinions about hypnosis?

I would be willing to try hypnosis, but it would so depend on the person doing the hypnotizing. But I can certainly see your concerns. Many of us with FMS have had a 'difficult' past. Letting someone mess with my head is a bit of a strange thought. I will be watching this conversation to see if anyone has had experience with hypnosis and FMS.

    hi folks

this is interesting as i was just thinking about trying hypnosis a few weeks ago, i have tried it before when i wanted to stop smoking and it worked, not smoked since and that was 3 years ago, i did go to a registered and recommended person however, but i do wonder if it could help ease our perceptions of pain?

i'll let you know if i go ahead with some

I have had hypnosis.  I tried it at the time because I was so anxious, I could barely leave my home.  It helped quite a bit.  I went 1/week for about 10 weeks and was much better - I could leave my house and go grocery shopping without having a panic attack!!  It's almost like going to a psychotherapist - we sat and talked about what was bothering me, then the therapist taped our session.  All of the tapes were tailored to whatever issue(s) you had - I would listen to the tapes 1-2/times a day - or more if I was anxious.  My therapist had a very soothing voice, so I really relaxed when she spoke.  I would listen to my favorite tapes when I went to sleep, and I always fall asleep listening to the tape.  My therapist told me that my subconsious would listen even if I wasn't awake.  I know it helped my anxiety, but I don't know if it would help pain.  It might make you stronger and thus able to deal with your pain better, but I don't think it could help something that you have no control over.  When you're feeling your worst, though, anything is worth a try!  Good luck!
