Vices and Addictions

Have you had to make a choice between the guai protocol and hanging onto a particular vice or addiction? If so, how did you handle the decision? Did you bargain? Did you cheat on the protocol and try to get away with it for a while? Was it worth it?

Example: cigarettes, excessive alcohol, favorite SA-loded skin/haircare products.

PS. Cigarettes contain SA's through the menthol flavoring and the tobacco itself, excessive alcohol dehydrates the body and makes the kidneys work harder.)

I bargained and cheated like crazy my first four months. I tried to rationalize it by saying, "I have eczema. I MUST have that soap!" When in the end it really wasn't true. No, I really do have eczema, but there are other SA-Free products out there(and natural SA-Free oils!) that can be used to soothe eczema just as well as the SA-Loaded stuff. I was just too lazy to search for them and research what I needed to do. It was all laziness.

As good as the occasional drunken night would make me feel when I was in a lot of pain, I had to give that up. 1) I'm not in that much pain anymore 2) I had to give my kidneys a chance to do their job. I'm a waterholic now. I never go anywhere without my bottle of water.

It makes me sad, though, that my Mother will not be able to start the protocol unless she can beat her addiction to cigarettes. She's trying. But I can tell that she's just not ready yet. That's going to be a battle she has to fight on her own if she really wants to feel better.

Angel, If your mother wants to start the protocol, she can still do it.  Some of the members of guaigroup are smokers and are clearing.  Perhaps not as fast, but at least they are not going backwards.  I switched from menthol cigarettes to clove cigarettes and am continuing to work on quitting - It's such a nasty habit!  I'll do it eventually but I wouldn't  wait.  Some people are more sal-sensitive than others.  Dr. St. Amand says I'm not blocking - I am just extra careful everywhere else.  It is a goal I am working toward though.  Baby steps.

Baby steps is right. She's had it since her twenties and she's in her fifties now! She's got a long road ahead of her but I'm having a hard time convincing her that she needs to at least start on the initial dose to get something good going in her body. She's poo poo's me left and right and says that she's ok on what she's on but I see how much she hurts. I've backed off because I don't want to be pushy but I tell ya- it's so HARD seeing her hurt and not want to cram some guai down her throat! Harsh. But that's the truth. That's how I feel.

She's going to try Chantix(sp?) in a bit to help her stop smoking. Expensive stuff but she's seen some of her friends stop smoking with it and they've all given it rave reviews.

I quit on Chantix and started back up when my grandmother died.  That's the route I'm going to take too.  It worked the first time and was actually easy.  It gets to where they taste horrible and you don't get a "kick" from it anymore, so why do it?

I hope it works for her.  As far as I'm concerned, it's well worth the bucks.  However, did you read the newest news on it?  It has big warnings that if you have psychological problems, or hidden tendencies toward them, it could bring them out.  Watch her closely for depression.  I didn't have any side effects from it, but I'm pretty tolerant of most meds.  There is a class action suit in progress by people who had real problems.  You might want to check it out.

I wish her the best of luck!  If she see's you getting better and better, she'll hopefully be willing to give the Guai a go.

Yikes! We're both on anti-depressants. The mean-manic monster does rear it's ugly head when we're not on them.

I haven't read any news or class-action suits about it. I'll start researching it. Thanks for the head's up!

I was hoping that by her seeing how much I've improved that she'd want to get on the guai but... I don't know. She is waiting for... something. I don't know what. I can't figure it out. I just hate seeing her miserable.

As you keep improving, she'll eventually come to you.  Can you imagine, "Angel, do you really think that stuff your taking is what's making you feel better?  What was it called again?"  Wouldn't that be great?

That would be beyond wonderful, Glenda!! But she has trouble remembering to take what meds she's on NOW! I am all the time reminding her to take her meds. It's like she's forgetful that if she doesn't take them then she feels worse. Then she complains the next day at how horrible she feels.I don't know. I don't mean to dump on everyone. It's just frustrating trying to get through to her.

If she'll take the plunge and stop smoking with the Chantix then I feel like she'll be receptive to doing something else good for her, ie the guaifenesin. But she's making excuse after excuse to not start the Chantix. So I stopped asking her about it. I guess she's kinda like me in some ways. Have to totally hit rock bottom before reality smacks me in the face. It's like she's got blinders on or something. She's so used to doing things as she's been doing them.

I know more about this illness than she does and she's a nurse for cryin' outloud.

Forget bargaining when you're on the protocol. She's bargaining how to NOT go on the protocol.

I am having HUGE trouble giving up mint toothpastes.
I have switched to Crest Cinnamon Rush or something and I guess I am not blocking cuz I can think better and have more energy (been on guai since June 2010).
But, I really want whiter teeth and the Crest 3D white stuff came out and boy howdy I really love mint toothpaste and whiter teeth! Lol.
Sounds so silly when you type it out, huh?
Well, I tried Cleure toothpaste Fibropharmacy toothpaste and Tom's of Maine toothpaste and their mouthwashes and YUCK!
I almost lost my lunch literally.
    Ugh!
I am religious about not using sals in all other products though.
Feeling better even w/out my mint toothpaste !!
