Kava Kava

Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) is a herb originally found in Hawaii and the West Pacific. It has been used traditionally for anxiety but it also has the benefit of relaxing the muscles and helps relax you for sleep and calm the mind.

It can be bought over the counter in pill form or as a tincture but I have had the most benefit with buying the powdered herb at the health food store and making a tea. I get the teabags that you can seal with an iron or make/buy an unbleached muslin bag and add 1-1 1/2 tsp of the ground herb. Add hot water and let it steep until it is cool enough to drink. I add honey or pure cane sugar to taste and sip when I am having a really bad muscle spasm day, bad muscle tension and recurrent insomnia.

When you drink it in tea form or chew the tablets (not the capsules) it will numb your tongue and throat. So this is wonderful for a sore a throat or mouth.

As with anything and everything, moderation is the key. I use it when I am having an especially bad day because it will make you feel in a 'dream-like' state with a slight feeling of euphoria. So it really helps with anxiety and anxious feelings.

If you think it is something you want to try, research it and ask me any questions about my experiences with it. I have been learning herbalism since I was 14 (almost 26 years now) so should be able to help with most questions.

Hopefully this can help someone else out there!

I use to take kava kava in the past, I thought it taken off the market. Can you still get it? Off all the herbal suppliments kava kava worked the best. I never had the urphoria feeling but it did help relax my muscles. I thought it was taken off the market so I didn't think we could still get it.

Ithink the FDA researched it but never actually removed it. I have been buying it for years and even picked some capsules up at Walgreens because the Health Food Store is not very close. I know you can go to konakavafarm.com and they sell it have been for a long time. They have kava in any form you can imagine and a lot of good information about it.

Sometimes I vibrate so much and kava kava is the only relief I get and I still prefer to make a tea from the powder as it seems to work the best.

i prefer the tincture; i can add a little water or milk to the drops so help with the taste (because holy crap! how can anyone tolerate the taste?!) and i take it like a shot.  my mouth will go numb about a minute or 2 afterward.  it really helps with anxiety, depression, muscle stiffness and spasm, and a ton of brain symptoms.

here's pretty much everything to know about it:  http://www.erowid.org/plants/kava/kava.shtml
